The Marathon of the Sands is a race that is run over six days (seven for some) through the Sahara Desert in Morocco. This is an awesome feat that sees the competitors crossing mixed terrain of rocks, sand and scrub in temperatures that can reach 120°F.
The Competitors will encounter monstrous sand dunes and mountains, and if that isn’t enough, all of the competitors have to carry everything that they need for that week on their backs. The organisers provide tents, water and medical facilities but there are no supermarkets in the desert and so each competitor must carry enough food for the whole of the event.
February 2008 and I have just sent my deposit for “The Marathon Des Sables 2010” The MDS is affectionately known as the “Toughest Foot Race on Earth” and it is for this reason I have chosen to do it. I have completed a number of Marathons and been part of a team who completed John O’Groats to Lands End in 1990 which was a fantastic experience. However I felt I was getting lazy and as you can see have put on some pork over the years. I needed something to focus the mind and this entry has definitely done that. 2010 brings with it my 50th birthday and I felt the need to do something extreme to celebrate it..
I will be running the MDS for Asthma Research which is a disease I have suffered from all my life.
