Sandbach Striders

A number of the Sandbach Striders took a trip to London, with the intention of running between the landmarks used on the Monopoly board Game.

It was an early start for some of us, 6 of us arrived at Crewe Train Station to catch the 6.38am train to Euston using the cheap deal offered by London Midland, all I can say is I’m glad the train started at Crewe and we all managed to get seats as the further south we journeyed the busier the train became, they even declassified 1st Class which had little impact with a number of passengers having to stand, but then you do get what you paid for I suppose!!
The train was on time and we arrived at Euston in plenty of time to get to the leisure Centre which was a couple of miles down the road were we met Mik and the other members.

Mik had arrange Tee Shirts especially for the day, pale green for the girls and white for the boys which we collected prior to the start of our run, some were more impressed than others!

Mik also added a little twist to the day, a little competition to keep us amused on the way around. We were to gather photo evidence of all the places visited, with additional bonus photos showing the pieces used on the Monopoly board, top hat, boat, (sports) car, iron, the boot and of course a Scottie dog. As soon as we went outside the cameras were out, the race was on...

As you can imagine, on a Saturday, London was pretty busy but we all managed to keep in one group most of the way around, stopping for the odd photo shoot and refreshments.

Running along Regent Street and Oxford Street seemed partially challenging dodging the shoppers, as we went down to Piccadilly Circus. Pall Mall and The Strand.

We zigzag though the streets of London and finally had a fairly straight run down to Old Kent Road, then it was back up to the river and across Tower Bridge. I seemed to find a second wind on Tower Bridge nearly knocking down a pedestrian in the process apparently, oops.
My boost of energy wasn’t to last, we had another refreshment stop around the 11- 12 mile mark, this wasn’t such a good idea, from here on my legs started the feel it!!

The photo competition was a tight finish between Jason and Terry, with Terry winning the obvious prize of a travel monopoly game, well done Terry!!

This is the longest I have even ran in one go, not sure I’m ready for a Marathon yet, but I’m now thinking about it.

I had a brilliant day, we achieved our goal and had a bit of a laugh along the way, can’t wait for the next one…
