Sandbach Striders

Now that we’ve all run our last races of 2014, it’s time to work out the scores in the two club championship series.
Liz - 2013 Championship Winner
As we’ve got a lot of new members this year, I’ll explain how the two different awards are worked out. There are two awards, the main club championship and the Alternative series (previously known as the Nutters series).

Tony - 2013 Championship Winner

The Alternative series is more for people who have run a lot of different types of less serious events rather than getting top 10 finishes at park runs every week. Points are awarded for different types of event as shown on the attached form. If you want to enter the alternative series, can you please fill in a copy of this file and email it to

Everyone is entered into the main club championship, which is based on races over standard distances, i.e. 5K, 5 mile, 10K, half/full marathon. Mik very kindly puts everyone’s times onto the website every time we run a race. A race time can be converted into a WAVA score (World Association of Veteran Athletes), and we use this scoring system to stop the younger club members getting an unfair advantage over the more mature of us. A WAVA score of 100 means you’ve run at about the world record time for that distance, corrected for your age & gender. If you run at half that speed the WAVA score is 50, three-quarters the speed gives a WAVA score of 75, etc. Your 8 best WAVA scores (at any standard distance) add together to give your total score, and the highest total scores for men and women win. Sound complicated? Fortunately I’ve got a spreadsheet to do all of the hard sums, and we’ll tell you who has won on Awards night.

Happy New Year to you all.
