Unfortunately the inclement weather meant that two events were cancelled which many members of Sandbach Striders running club were planning on entering.

The first casualty was the free weekly 5k parkrun at Congleton which was cancelled early on Saturday morning due to ice on the paths surrounding Astbury Mere.


Fortuately Striders were represented at three other parkrun events around the country. Firstly in nearby Delamere Forest there was a return to race action by three Striders, Tony and Ruth Ward and Caroline Brockbank. Their results were as follows:

Further south in Kilkhampton, Bude at the Upper Tamar Lake, a reservoir constructed on the border between Cornwall and Devon, Matt and Elaine Wood ran the circuit of this picturesque lake. Matt finished in 17th place in a time of 25:45. Elaine was closely behind in 23rd position in a time of 28:58.

A new parkrun event began in Victoria Park in Widnes parkrun. Starting at the ornate Victorian bandstand the course consisted of three laps of the park and lake. Michael Escolme finished in a time of 30:35.

Also in action was Saturday was Craig Edwards who ran the coastal trail half-marathon in Anglesey. Coming in closer to 15 miles the challenging route begins in Breakwater Country Park near Holyhead and takes in Mt. Holyhead and Trearddur Bay Beach. Craig finished the course in a time of 3:18.

On Sunday the Four-Villages Helsby Half-marathon was again cancelled due to ice. 26 members of Sandbach Striders were left disappointed when race organisers decided to once again cancel the event despite earlier assurances that the event would take place.

On Monday 26th January there will be another of Tony's track training sessions at the Cumberland Arena in Crewe. Meet at the club at 6:30pm to car share.
