Sandbach Striders

Yesterday Denis and I did the Parbold Hill Race. This takes place near Parbold, Wigan.

Was a very enjoyable event with great comradery amongst the runners, although it was challenging. We gathered at a tiny village school, then about 450+ runners set off from a field behind the school.

The first short stretch took us along the road before turning left and running up a track which became very steep and muddy towards the top of a quarry, (I didn't see the quarry.) We then headed across fields and over stiles to a track and then onto a footpath and UP Parbold Hill for about half a mile (PHEW!) There was an ice-cream van at the top but didn't get to stop!!

After the hill we turned away from the road and ran across some lovely countryside, both wooded and pasture, over a few walls and stiles, through some deep mud and a stream, and back along the lane to the finish. We were rewarded with a Parbold necker and a delicious Mars bar, although this was saved in favour of cake from the village hall! Would recommend this race to anyone who likes cross country running and doesn't mind getting muddy.

My thanks to Denis for persuading me to take part and for driving too!
