The infamous annual Mow Cop Killer Mile took place last Thursday.

Organised by the Mow Cop Residents’ Association this event consists of a series of separate races of one mile long starting from the base of Mow Cop and heading towards its summit. The route includes a stretch up the fourth steepest road in Britain which at its worst is a 25% incline. Steve Farnell entered all four adult races, Lindsay Beeston settled for two whilst Denis Culloty sensible opted for quality over quantity with just the one.

Of the 202 runners taking part at the free weekly Congleton parkrun at Astbury Mere 12 were Sandbach Striders. Alice Bober, Stella Stilwell and Barbara Evans all managing to improve their previous best times.

Wendy Barnes joined 447 other runners to run the Cheltenham parkrun, a popular three lap course adjacent to the Prince of Wales stadium. Wendy finished in a time of 28:20.

Meanwhile Michael Escolme ran the Stamford Park parkrun near Ashton-under-Lyme. The course at Stamford Park is a challenging technical mostly off-road course in between Manchester and the Peak District. Michael finished in a time of 32:23.

Saddleworth Running Club, held there annual 'Cake Race', on Saturday 2nd May. This is a 10 mile fell race with a difference, entry fees are waived to any runners who bring a cake. 


Tony Taylor was first Strider home and George Nicholls finished first in the U23 category. The full results were:

Darren Varley was back in action on Sunday at the Spartan 10k, a challenging obstacle course race located at Alton Hall in Cambridgeshire. Darren came 8th overall in a time of 43:13.

Sandbach Striders are a friendly, supportive and welcoming running club serving the communities of Sandbach, Middlewich, Alsager, Holmes Chapel and beyond for over ten years.
