Sandbach Striders

After 5 months of fine dining and booze, I wasn’t really looking forward to the Werrington 10K. I last did this race in 1999 and I did remember that there was a hill at the end of the race.

The weather conditions today were great, I even got to air my legs and wear my vest.  So many people shouted “ Go for it Liz” and I wondered who they were!, until I remembered my name was on the back of my vest.

The plan today was to get under 55 and James said he’d go for 52. The course started in the school grounds, then a quick run through the car park and then right turn on to the main Werrington Road, yeah it was downhill , then a right turn out into the country lanes.  I had James in my sight and also Karen (Stafford Road Runner) so kept up with them for a mile , then, James was lost in the distance. The first two miles was fairly flattish but once past the 2 mile mark there was a little bit of a climb.  I had a bit of a cat and mouse race with two runners in front, we spend at least a mile over taking each other.  Then at 3 ½ miles Natalie from South Cheshire Harriers caught up with me.  We ran together for a bit and then it was a bit of cat and mouse with us overtaking and falling behind each other.

The course continued to be undulating until we got to 5 miles and climbed a steady hill, but where there’s an up, there’s a down so got a bit of a rest until the last 300 meters which was uphill towards the school.  It was here I lost Natalie and managed to find a bit of a sprint into the car park again and onto the finish on the field where James was cheering me on. (Thanks).

It was a nice race, a bit hilly and I thought it was tough. You got a black technical t-shirt at the end. I finished in 56:46 and James in 49:42.
