Sandbach Striders

At the weekend members of Sandbach Striders running club competed in a  wide variety of different events, showing off the diversity of events that the Striders regularly enjoy participating in. As is usual, Striders were represented in four different 5k parkrun courses around the country. Closest to home were the eight who completed the three laps of Astbury Mere in Congleton.

James Boon continued his run of good form and recorded a new personal best time, whilst young William Treweeks outsprinted his dad Steve to record a new personal best time on his third ever parkrun.

Sandbach Striders at Congleton parkrun
Paul Barnett ran his 50thparkrun thus becoming eligible for his free parkrun 50 shirt. Paul returned to Hanley Park, the site of his first ever parkrun several years ago and finished the course in a time of 21:40.

Duncan Robertson travelled to Delamare Forest to run his first ever parkrun around the popular woodland route, finishing in a time of 25:38.


Michael Escolme was in West Yorkshire at the Temple Newsam parkrun, a hilly two lap course around this imposing seventeenth century mansion and its grounds. Crossgate Harriers, a local running club, took over the special Valentine’s Day event and provided a lot of encouragement to all the runners including free cakes and biscuits to aid recovery afterwards and a special heart shaped chocolate to each finisher.

A day earlier Michael had also been in action in Shrewsbury at the Charles Darwin Day marathon. This special event organized to celebrate the anniversary of Darwin’s birth was held at the Shrewsbury Sports Village and consisted of 42.2 laps of its 1km cycle track.

Paul Nicholls ran the Saltburn trail marathon in North Yorkshire, finishing the course in 7 hours 13 minutes.


Clare Pheasey and Terry Coppenhall were once more in action together at the Pengwern Perambulation a 21 mile event around Shrewsbury. Both completed the course in 5 hours 4 minutes.

Twelve Striders travelled to Wrexham to participate in the Village Bakery Half-marathon, a fast road race which starts and finishes at the Wrexham industrial Estate. Heather Carter finished in her category, whilst Lindsay Beech and Christiane Bunte also ran new personal best times.
