Sandbach Striders

Around this time each year the club runs the Sandbach 10k route instead of the usual Wednesday night club run. This gives members the chance to take part in the event as they help marshall and organise the race in September. This year as we’ve moved the event, it was a good opportunity to test out the new course.

Having only had the route officially measure on Monday, this was a great opportunity to test the new route out properly. So on 14th June, a rather warm and humid Wednesday evening, we set off from Bradwall Village hall to Pillar Box Lane where the start of the course is.

The route heads down Pillar Box Lane, turning left onto Walnut Tree Lane, before turning right back onto Bradwall Road. After a few kilometers it joins back onto the route of the original 10k heading past Jones’s Lane and Wood Lane. From here the runners continue on and around to Cledford Lane, before turning right onto Jones’s Lane. At the end of Jones’s Lane the course turns left and it’s a good straight back to the finish just outside Bradwall Village hall, the HQ for the Sandbach 10k.

The 2k timing team were at the finishing line to collate the times and hand all the runners a finishing token. Darren Varley came in first, setting the first ‘course record’ in a time of 39 minutes dead. Heather Carter was first female with a time of 42:29.

It was great to see all the members gathering around to cheer in all the finishers (with Darren on the claxon!), before we headed back into the hall for the prize presentations a well earned drink and some nibbles. It was a very hot and humid evening, but everyone enjoyed themselves.

Many thanks to all of the members (and some of their children) who marshalled the course, provided water en route, provided tail bike, bought goodies and the prizes for afterwards as well as the time keepers. Goes to show what a great club we have.
